What Lies Beyond the Frame
I've been fucking around with pictures since I was able to get ahold of my mom's disposable Kodak. Once cameras were added to mobile phones, I was in big business! I regularly cleared out my phone storage because I took pictures of everything I saw—I wish I still had those pictures.
I got my first DSLR in 2019—a Canon EOS Rebel SL1 and the first picture I took was of the mountains in Nashville, TN. Back then, my farthest reach in the world of editing was Picsart. A couple filters added and maybe a touch of darkened shadows, but I didn't put a lot of work into it. Not my best work, but everyone starts somewhere. (You can still find these works using #poetrybykrib on instagram).
I have always been more of a free-form artist; never really knowing what exactly to make or write or do. I have always admired artists like David Lynch who seem to make whatever comes to their mind—I always felt like my mind drew blanks when I tried getting it to function.
In "The Art Life", a documentary about David Lynch and his life as an artist, Lynch says “I knew my stuff sucked, but I needed to burn through, I needed to find what was mine, and the only way to find it is just to keep painting, and see if you catch something.” and that's exactly what I decided to do:
Keep creating and see if I catch something.
I think I'm starting to.
